Plug-in solar with battery storage: is it worth it?
A battery promises to fix plug-in solar's biggest limitation: that surplus daytime generation is otherwise exported (and may earn nothing). By storing it for the evening, a battery can raise how much of your own solar you actually use.But batteries add cost and complexity, and change the economics. This guide weighs it up. Start with solar self-consumption for the underlying idea.

What a battery changes
Without a battery, plug-in solar only saves on what you use as it's generated. A battery captures the midday surplus you'd otherwise export and releases it when you need it — typically the evening — so more of your generation offsets electricity you'd have bought. That can meaningfully raise the value of a system in a home that's empty during the day.
The cost trade-off
Storage isn't free. A battery adds a substantial upfront cost relative to a panel-only setup, so while it raises self-consumption, it also lengthens the payback period. Whether it's worth it depends on your usage pattern, the price, and how much surplus you'd otherwise waste. See our cost and worth-it pages for the broader economics, and avoid treating any saving as guaranteed.
The rules still apply
Adding a battery doesn't change the legal position: plug-in solar is not yet legal to use in the UK, and the current Government consultation specifically excludes battery storage. Check the legal status before buying.

Frequently asked questions
- Is a battery worth it for plug-in solar?
- It can be if your home is empty during the day and would otherwise export most of its generation, because a battery shifts that surplus to the evening. But it adds significant upfront cost and lengthens payback, so it depends on your usage and the price.
- Are batteries covered by the UK plug-in solar consultation?
- No. The current Government consultation is about plug-in solar without batteries. Battery storage is outside its scope, and plug-in solar is not yet legal to use in the UK regardless.
